The apple branches I set in a jug by the fireplace have burst into bloom, though the pruning is not yet done. Could we stop? Maybe. That's the question that prompts this week's essay, "Feathered Maidens."

Last week we lost one of Canada's best writers in the garden, Midge Keeble. She died just two years shy of her hundredth birthday, and she'd been gardening for most of that century. Her book has been on my bookshelf for 25 years, and now it's on the Frugalista Bookshelf, too. Try to find it for your shelf, too. You won't be disappointed.
